Chased By Hippos
On Wednesday evening, we took a boat ride into Sanyati Gorge. We went down an arm of the lake and found a pod of hippos at the end of it. The hippos saw us and immediately slipped into the water. It was amazing how quickly they closed the distance between the shore and our boat. Bruce, our crazy guide, fired up the motor and began to move out. Seconds later, a large hippo breached right where our boat had been drifting. A second hippo surfaced nearby. They wanted to eat us. We cleared out of there quick.
We only went a couple hundred yards and got stuck in a large patch of tules. It took us a while to dig out of the crocodile infested waters. From there we turned toward camp and watched some friendlier hippos at sunset. We ate a yummy dinner at camp before bed.
On Thursday morning, we slept in and then went for a safari drive on our way to the airport. We saw a bunch more hippos, zebras, and elephants. One pod of hippos had killed their mate. We ate lunch in the middle of a heard of elephants. When we arrived at the air strip, we drove up and down and zig-zagged across the runway to chase the impalas off before our plane landed to pick us up. Now we are back in Harare for Good Friday services.
